.

I am an independent art historian specialized in History of Architecture

and
cultural mediator. I work between Lisbon and Italy, and previously I have lived
in Germany, Turkey and Spain..

I
graduated in Conservation of Cultural Heritage (historical-artistic area, old
degree) in Ravenna (University of Bologna) under prof. Stefano Tumidei. Since then I have conducted deeper research about painting and architecture from 17th-century and 18th-century, some of which is published in the atlas of the works of Andrea Vici, edited by Maria Luisa Polichetti (Andrea Vici, Architetto e Ingegnere Idraulico. Altlante delle Opere, Silvana Editoriale).

I have
worked as conservator in old masters and modern art museums, both public and
private, where I dealt with catalogues and started the archiving of existing
holdings. Furthermore, I curated exhibition programs and organized the
educational department of various cultural institutions..

I currently collaborate also with the
Trienal Arquitectura Lisboa (creation of the Documentation Centre) and the Fundação Centro
Cultural de Belém (cultural mediator). In the past I

have collaborated, among others, with the Gemäldegalerie and Neue
Nationalgalerie (Berlin).

CITYTIME Architecture Art Cityscape project is about shared places, such as the architecture.
It is common that human beings choose a place to eat and for shelter.
It is common that the chosen place is organised and built according to its intended use
and with an inclination for aesthetics, however minimal.

There are places to meet each other and to produce, places for celebration and private places.
The moment we “occupy” a place, it establishes in turn our position in society, which therefore is neither neutral nor impartial,
because it determines and conveys one’s image both in the community, and in history.

- Living in Lisbon informally. A short tale -

A
few weeks ago, I walked through the São João de Brito neighbourhood within a
workshop organized by Iscte University. The history of the neighbourhood dates
back to the 1960s when families and individuals from rural areas in Portugal
arrived in Lisbon in search of work and a better life. They settled on a piece of
land near the airport and built makeshift shacks to live in.

After
April 25, 1974, the population of the neighbourhood grew as Portuguese people
returned from former colonies that were gaining independence. Angola and
Mozambique were the two countries from which the largest number of people came.

The
municipality granted the already partially occupied land, and additional shacks
were built over the years. Each family took it upon themselves to adapt and
improve their dwellings, gradually replacing mud, wood, stones, and corrugated iron
with bricks and cement. Single-family homes of one, two, and occasionally three
stories were built. Some were surrounded by a strip of garden or had a small
vegetable patch, reminiscent of the housing styles in the areas where the
residents originated and, obviously a way to get some food.

The
municipality promised to legalize the dwellings, but for decades, the situation
remained stagnant, with families living in constant fear of forced eviction. In
2017, the official redevelopment works for the neighbourhood were approved by
the municipality, which included the complete replacement of the sewage, electrical,
gas, lighting, water, and telecommunication systems. It also seems that the
process of legalizing the neighbourhood had started in that year.

The
construction works began in 2021. I believe they have been completed, but there
is a lack of green spaces, shops, and a gathering centre for the elderly, who
represent the largest age group. There is a lack of urban identity because the
residents have already given to their homes their own architectural identity,
building them brick by brick with their own hands.

The
Residents' Association has been fighting since 1990 for the legalization of the
bairro and for improving the living conditions of its population.

This
story is just one of the stories about the processes of non-change in a city as
Lisbon, the frictions opposed to urban improvement, which should mean a
tangible improvement in the lives of everyone.
